I first came across Billy Heckenberg's beautiful geometric prints a few months ago on Instagram and instantly I was hooked! The designer Cushions, Bags & accessories range are all hand sewn by Sydney based Designer Maddy Duggan. Inspired by anything industrial and not afraid to mix pattern, colour & texture has made this up and coming textiles range a huge hit.
I recently purchased the Black Triangle One Clutch bag and it didn't disappoint. The black & white geometric pattern is printed on a canvas linen blend fabric, with an acrylic cover and featuring a protective inner lining, it is the perfect make up & toiletries bag.
I recently chatted with Maddy all about her Billy Heckenberg designs and what the future holds for the brand.

How did Billy Heckenberg start?
I'll start by saying that you must always be open to change as you never know where it will lead you. For years I had dreamt that Billy Heckenberg would be a leather accessory and lifestyle brand. I had been working on a sample collection and endulging in my passion for leather for quite some time and in order to finance my dream I created my first collection of cushions to sell at various markets. It's safe to say I found my calling. I could never have dreamed things would turn out the way they have, the response has been overwhelming and for that I am truly grateful. Designing textiles has always been a passion of mine but it was the decision to launch that got me to where I am today, and that's always the hardest part.
Where did the name Billy Heckenberg come from?
This would have to be the most frequently asked question I get and the answer is quite simple really. William Heckenberg was my great grandfather on my mum's side and I have always loved his name. The decision to change it to Billy makes the name young and fresh whilst mixing the old with the new.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I have always loved the very idea of taking the invisible and making it visible, having a vision and bringing it to life. Growing up in a creative household lead me to complete a degree in Fine Arts where my main focus was photography and also included painting, drawing and textiles. Looking back it was the perfect start to my creative career, but I didn't know it at the time.
After graduating from university I was fortunate enough to take off overseas for the next couple of years. Traveling throughout Europe has to be one of the most incredible and memorable experiences of my life, not only for the cultural aspect, it was also when I met my husband Ronan. Eleven years later and we have the most amazing 3 year old daughter Erin, who completes our little family.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I am always inspired by the unconventional and seeing beauty in life's imperfections. All things industrial and anything New York sums this up perfectly for me. Unafraid to mix prints and textures, building up layers and finding the right balance all play a huge part in the creative process.
What does the future hold for Billy Heckenberg?
Everyday I am coming up with new ideas for the brand and I just can not wait to get them all out there. My biggest and most exciting would have to be the bedding range that I am currently working on at the moment. Over the next year I would like to expand into all areas of homewares including wallwares, tableware and statement furniture pieces, and in addition to this there will be a larger range of bags and clutches coming out soon.
